What type of devices are noted to provide little protection against aspiration during intubation?

Supraglottic devices are designed to facilitate airway management; however, they do not provide a secure airway that extends below the vocal cords. Since they sit above the glottis, they do not form a complete barrier against aspiration. This positioning means that if gastric contents are present, they can potentially flow into the airway, leading to aspiration pneumonia or other complications.

In contrast, endotracheal tubes properly secure the airway by entering the trachea, which significantly reduces the risk of aspiration. Laryngeal masks also create a seal above the glottis but are more effective than supraglottic devices in airway protection. Bougies are adjunct tools used to assist in intubation rather than functioning as airway devices themselves and do not play a role in protecting against aspiration directly.
